While Japan is the class side in Group F, there is an interesting battle looming for the runner up spot and the guaranteed place in the Round of 16 between Oman and Uzbekistan.

Japan

The most successful side in Asian Cup history, Japan is looking to add a fifth continental title to its cabinet, repeating its success of 2011.

Qualification

Japan finished on top of Group E in the second round of qualifying, sending them straight through to Asian Cup. Perhaps more impressively, the side did not concede a goal in any of its eight group matches.

Group Winner Odds

Japan to Win Group F – $1.20

Biggest Game

For Japan, its biggest game will undoubtedly come later in the month of January as it is expected to win all three games in Group F. First and foremost the side will need to take care of business against Turkmenistan.

Asian Cup Odds

Japan to Win the Asian Cup – $5

Overall Preview

As one of the strongest sides in Asia, Japan will look to back up its Round of 16 appearance in the World Cup and turn that into an Asian Cup triumph. With a semi final berth as the bare minimum for this side, a trophy might just be a step too far.

Oman

Oman is becoming a regular feature in the Asian Cup, with their three tournament appearances coming in the last four tournaments. Success has eluded them at these tournaments however with two wins and three draws from its nine group matches.

Qualification

Oman finished second in the second round Group D, missing automatic qualification as the seventh ranked runner up side, forcing them into the third phase of qualifying. In that group, the side finished on top of Group D ahead of Palestine on head to head records. The highlight of that campaign came in a 14-0 win over Bhutan.

Group Winner Odds

Oman to Win Group F – $17

Biggest Game

Oman is no stranger to causing dramas in its opening game, holding Australia to a draw in 2007 and pushing South Korea to the brink in 2015 before going down 1-0. If the team is to get out of the group stage for the first time in their history, they will need to pull off an upset win over a tough Uzbekistan team.

Asian Cup Odds

Oman to Win the Asian Cup – $67

Overall Preview

Oman will see this as the best chance it has had to advance to the knockout phase of the tournament, whether as a group runner up or one of the best ranked third place teams. Should they get through to the Round of 16 a tough task awaits as they will likely take on a group winner as heavy underdogs.

Turkmenistan

For just the second time in its history, Turkmenistan will enter the Asian Cup, hoping for a better result than in 2004 when it finished with just one draw, coming against Saudi Arabia.

Qualification

Turkmenistan went into the third round of qualifying after finishing in third place in Group D behind Iran and Oman. In the third round they beat out Chinese Taipei and Singapore for the runner up spot in Group E thanks to a 2-1 over Chinese Taipei on the penultimate matchday.

Group Winner Odds

Turkmenistan to Win Group F – $67

Biggest Game

When Turkmenistan takes on Oman, it will see that as the best chance of picking up a win in the tournament. It does have the confidence of beating Oman 2-1 in qualifying but it did lose the away match 3-1.

Asian Cup Odds

Turkmenistan to Win the Asian Cup – $501

Overall Preview

There is not a whole lot to dress up about this side, a point might be a good tournament and avoiding getting blasted by Japan and even Uzbekistan could constitute success for a side likely to be underdogs in every match.

Uzbekistan

Eight years ago, Uzbekistan pulled off a fourth place finish and while a repeat performance is unlikely, this side should see itself as a legitimate contender to win a quarter final.

Qualification

Uzbekistan won Group H in the second round of qualifying with seven wins and a loss, sending them through to the Asian Cup.

Group Winner Odds

Uzbekistan to Win Group F – $5

Biggest Game

First and foremost, this side needs to take care of business against an Oman team that will see an upset as a real possibility. From there that final group game against Japan could be critical as that result might be the difference maker in terms of a runner up finish or needing to go into the tiebreaker of third placed sides.

Asian Cup Odds

Uzbekistan to Win the Asian Cup – $21

Overall Preview

Uzbekistan are more than good enough to get through to the Round of 16 as runners up and from there it will come down to who they are drawn against. Should they finish in second place behind Japan they will take on the runner up from Group B instead of having the lottery of the third placed side.
