Haddad Maia Finally Has a Major Breakthrough
A former top junior, Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil was expected to be a breakthrough star on the women’s side, something South American tennis had been looking for, for a long time.
But it’s been a bumpy road for the now 27-year-old, who lost time with a 10-month doping suspension because of a contaminated supplement, and then the shutdown tennis experienced in the early days of the pandemic.
Finally, she was able to get some momentum. And after ending 2020 at No. 358 and finishing 2022 at No. 15, she has her first major breakthrough. Haddad Maia had never even gone past the second round of any Grand Slam Tournaments – until this one.
Her last two matches, against No. 23 seed Ekaterina Makarova (2h48, 7-5 in the third set) and against unseeded Sara Sorribes Tormo in the round of 26 (3h51, 7-5 in the third set) would have taken a ton out of her, though.
Jabeur’s Road Fairly Smooth
The 2010 runner up (to Elina Svitolina) and 2011 junior girls’ champion in Paris, Jabeur has played the women’s event five previous times and has one third round, two round of 16s and two first-round exits to her credit.
It had long been expected that she would be a serious contender in Paris. But until now, she hasn’t posted the results on the court.

Jabeur, 28, has had the draw to do it: Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti, France’s Océane Dodin, Serbia’s Olga Danilovic and American Bernarda Pera: three unseeded players and the qualifier Danilovic, who was the only one to take a set from her.
She spent about as much time winning her last three matches as Haddad Maia did just in her round of 16 win over Sorribes Tormo.

Jabeur Undefeated vs Haddad Maia
The evidence isn’t massive, but Jabeur has beaten Haddad both times they have met. The most recent came a month ago, on indoor clay in Stuttgart, and was comprehensive.
The first was seven years ago, on the minor-league circuit.
Clay is Jabeur’s jam, and it’s where she’s best able to express all the variety in her game and is the most comfortable.
Despite being South American, Haddad Maia’s power game actually is best expressed on a faster hard court.
Haddad Maia vs Jabeur Match History
Year | Tournament | Surface | Score | Winner |
---|---|---|---|---|
2023 | Stuttgart (QF) | Indoor Clay | 6-3, 6-0 | Jabeur |
2016 | Joue-Les Tours (ITF – R32) | Outdoor Clay | 6-4, 6-4 | Jabeur |
Haddad Maia vs Jabeur Prediction
Even before Haddad Maia took the marathon route to get to the final eight, Jabeur would still have been a favorite.
The fact that she has to recover from a nearly four-hour match, against an opponent who is going to do everything possible to make sure the big, strong six-footer discovers every inch of the court and has to do a lot of running, just makes Jabeur even more of a favorite.
If the Tunisian is a little nervous at the thought of her first semifinal in Paris, she’s experienced enough now to handle that sort of thing.
