Iceland entertain Montenegro on Friday (19:45) for their Uefa Nations League opener. They are in League B Group 4 with Turkey and Wales, so both sides will look for a strong start in this clash.

The hosts are in decent form of late with four wins from their last six, while the visitors are looking to bounce back from two losses on the bounce. Read on for my Iceland vs Montenegro prediction, featuring match odds and team news.

Team News

Former Everton, Swansea and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson returns to the national team after being absent for the past eight games.

Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson was the last person to score for Our Boys as they defeated England in a friendly at Wembley Stadium in June. He is likely to start on the left flank again.

Andri Gudjohnsen should keep his place up front, having scored six goals in his 23 outings for the senior team. Willum Willumsson is back in the squad after pulling out of the last camp due to injury.

The midfielder has started the season strongly with Birmingham City in League 1, registering a goal and an assist in his first four league appearances. He is joined by team-mate Alfons Sampsted in the squad for the September international break, and both will be hoping for minutes against Montenegro.

Montenegro have no fresh concerns heading into this clash.

Iceland to win @ 1/1

I think the home side are worth backing because they have been in great form in recent months. They have won four of their last six matches and so they will be confident coming up against a Montenegro side that have lost their last two matches.

With Willumsson back available to feature, Iceland are given another strong attacking player who can have an impact, whether that be from the get-go or from the bench.

Their win over England in June was impressive as they once again showed how they can be creative despite not seeing much of the ball. They are precise when they have the ball and I think this will once again work in their favour on Friday, especially with them playing on home soil.

Momentum is with them despite losing 4-0 to the Netherlands last time out, as it was a game they were expected to lose, but their record of four wins from six speaks for itself. Montenegro were defeated by Belgium and Georgia in June, and I think they could still be reeling from those losses when they travel to Iceland.

The hosts will look to capitalise on this and I believe they can get off to a flying start in the Nations League.

Iceland to win at 1/1 Over 2.5 goals @ 11/10

I think we could be in for a few goals on Friday as both teams will be looking for an impressive start in League B Group 4. There were four goals in Montenegro’s 3-1 defeat last time out, and I think that their defence will be a little shaky against Iceland as a result.

Over 2.5 goals has also been a winning selection in three of Iceland’s last four fixtures, which is why I am inclined to see this trend continue on Friday.
