I’m going to take a chance on one at a massive price to kick off the Sunday Series at Beverley. CATCH CUNNINGHAM shouldn’t be 25/1 for this. I know he has largely struggled this season but he has now dropped 6lb in the handicap down to a mark of 76 (3lb below his last winning mark) and if he bounces back he could prove dangerous in here. His sole run at this track as a 2yo was a good run too beaten less than a length and I think we could see a revival here.
Papa Cocktail is on a four-timer but was just a neck in front at Carlisle and 3lb higher and dropping back to 5f might not be ideal so he will likely need to find more from somewhere. Le Beau Garcon was a good third at Catterick and is actually the one I fear most if building on that.
Not an easy race to get a gauge on with none of these horses having run previously so the market pre-race will be most informative. I am going to take a punt on WINTER LIFE for the in-form Charlie Johnston. The yard usually do well early in the season and she is one of the older horses in the race foaled over 5 months before the favourite. By Churchill she has a solid pedigree and seems a fair each way price.
Spiritual Pursuit is the favourite due to her pedigree and the fact Archie Watson does very well with 2 year olds on their first run so has to be respected. Of the rest Charlie Johnston’s other runner Carolina Reaper has to be in with a chance being a daughter of Too Darn Hot.
Beverley 4.45
I was quite surprised to see THE PREDICTOR sent off such a big price at Chester last time following that big run in defeat when denied just a neck at Ripon back in April. He did well to get as close as he did last time having been sent for home too soon in hindsight. Back down to 2 miles I’m expecting him to run a big race just 1lb higher here and I think he is a bit overpriced.
Geremia impressed beating Dundory at Hamilton and should run well but no juice in his price as he will likely go off favourite. World Without Love also arrives in winning form having scored by 2 lengths at Carlisle last time and if she is in that sort of form again she will likely get competitive once more. Legendary Day obviously has form that ties in with the selection but he is higher in the weights now and has been beaten twice since.
Beverley 5.15
This is one of the fastest 5 furlongs in the country and with so many front runners it’s going to be rapid again. I quite like one of the two hold up horses that got no sort of run at York with a slight preference for THANKUAPPRECIATE. He was in great form prior to the run at York where he was slow away and was stuck behind so many horses. He was dropped a pound for that run and if back to form here he will love the pace and be coming home well.
Winter Crown finished in front of him that day but also had no gap in-running, with a bit more luck he will be flying home as well. Quandary is the main danger after a nice win at Pontefract where he travelled strongly to win cosily. This is a better race but he is progressing well for the in-form Ed Bethell.
Beverley 5.45
Reach obviously won very easily at Nottingham last time but she was fully entitled to and this is much tougher. I think she is an awful price to be honest and I like the look of MY LITTLE QUEENS at 6/1 at the time of writing. This Mastercraftsman mare is likeable and she has won 2 of her last 3 now. She beat a good horse in Nigwa at Hamilton last time and arrives here at the top of her game. She looks a bit overpriced for this.
Dubai Crystal has only had 4 starts and impressed winning at Redcar on penultimate start. She didn’t do much wrong when second at Ascot and if handling this faster surface might emerge as the main danger. Tregony was on a real roll when last seen but she often needs her first run of the season so might be best watched.
Beverley 6.15
I was at Epsom to see AUSTRIAN THEORY win a fiercely competitive handicap and you’d have to be impressed with the way he kept grinding it out in the closing stages. Back in trip here up just a couple of pounds it is hard to see how he doesn’t go close to following up. I think as long as this doesn’t come too soon then he is by far and away the most likely winner so 7/2 at the time of writing could look a big price.
In terms of a danger The Cookstown Cafu is clearly thriving with recent form figures of 12112 and despite a career-high mark of 85 now he is still the obvious threat. On The River is going for four wins in a row so shouldn’t be dismissed easily either but up another 5lb life will be tougher here. Maywake needs them to go hard to try and pick them off late but not an easy task at all.
Beverley 6.45
I’m fairly certain THE NU FORM WAY is the obvious value for the lucky last. He has won 2 of his last 3 and there was lots to like about the way he hit the line at Chester last time. He is 5lb higher for this but there is a chance he could still improve again looking at his profile and I’m surprised he isn’t a little shorter in the betting.
Fulfilled prevailed by a neck at Ripon last time but he had been a little frustrating prior to that (turned over as favourite three times in a row) and I think he will be overbet for this and might be worth avoiding. Eeetee carries top weight but probably with good reason as that form beating Dukeman is decent but he blew out at York prior to that so can be a bit tricky. Decent race to close out.
