Seeking The Soul Jumps To Third In Breeders’ Cup Classic Rankings
Charles Fipke’s 6-year-old homebred Seeking the Soul jumped to No. 3 (165 votes) after the second week of the Breeders’ Cup Classic Rankings following his stirring win on Saturday evening in the Stephen Foster (G2) at Churchill Downs, the first North American “Win and You’re In” race for the Breeders’ Cup Classic division. Seeking the Soul trails Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman’s 4-year-old McKinzie (263 votes) and Godolphin’s 5-year-old Thunder Snow (IRE) (238 votes), who were both idle last week.
The Breeders’ Cup Classic Rankings, a weekly rating of the top 10 horses in contention for the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park on November 2, are determined by a panel of leading Thoroughbred racing media, horseplayers and members of the Breeders’ Cup Racing Directors/Secretaries Panel. Rankings are announced each week through October 15 and can be found on the Breeders’ Cup website along with the list of voting members.
In the Breeders’ Cup Classic Rankings, each voter ranks horses by assigning their allotted votes on a 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 system in descending order.
Seeking the Soul, a bay son of Perfect Soul (IRE), trained by Dallas Stewart, defeated WinStar Farm LLC, China Horse Club International Ltd. and SF Racing LLC‘s 4-year-old Quip by a neck in the Foster for his first win of the year. Seeking the Soul, second in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) and runner-up in this year’s Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1), broke into the top 10 Classic Rankings for the first time this week.
“We will definitely be in the Breeders’ Cup Classic this year,” Stewart said following the Foster. “This horse is so special to our entire barn. We have to thank Mr. Fipke for allowing us to train him. With family and friends here tonight, this is as good as it gets – we’re in the Classic.”
Seeking the Soul took the third spot from Gary and Mary West’s 3-year-old Maximum Security, who dropped out of the top 10 Classic Rankings following his second-place finish in Sunday’s Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth Park.
Robert LaPenta, Madaket Stables, Siena Farm and Twin Creeks Racing Stables’ 4-year-old Catholic Boy (150 votes) moved from fifth to fourth place in the Classic Rankings, and is followed by Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable’s 4-year-old Vino Rosso (145 votes), who rose one spot to fifth this week.
Hronis Racing’s 6-year-old Gift Box (113 votes), fourth as the 2-1 favorite in the Foster, dropped from third to sixth place.
Fox Hill Farms’ 3-year-old Omaha Beach (78 votes) retained the seventh position, followed by Salomon Del Valle’s 5-year-old Gunnevera (70 votes), who improved from 10thto eighth place.
Quip (62 votes) enters the top 10 for the first time in ninth place. Gary Barber’s Preakness Stakes (G1) winner War of Will (58 votes), dropped from eighth to 10th place, and Juddmonte Farms’ 3-year-old Tacitus (56 votes) dropped off the top 10 list this week.
