The UK Summer Solstice – 21st June 2019
The UK Summer Solstice – 21st June 2019
The Summer Solstice – also known as Midsummer – arrives on Friday 21st June 2019 at 4:54 pm BST. It occurs when one of the Earth’s poles reaches its maximum tilt toward the Sun. This happens twice a year, once in the Northern Hemisphere and once in the Southern Hemisphere.
In terms of light there will be 16 hours and 38 minutes of daylight. This day is 8 hours, 49 minutes longer than the Winter Solstice. The earliest sunrise was on 17th June. The latest the sun will set is on 25th June 2019.
What does summer solstice mean?
The summer solstice is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere – the day on which that region receives the most hours of daylight. The Sun will appear at its highest in the northern sky, directly over the Tropic of Cancer.
On the opposite side of the world in the Southern Hemisphere, it will mark the shortest day of the year. That area will have the least hours of sunlight for that day. The astronomical seasons occur as the Earth’s axis is on a tilt from the sun, so different parts of the world receive more solar energy than others. The seasons are based on the Earth’s journey around the sun, with the four quarters of the orbit determining our four seasons. This, in turn, creates the seasons
Spring (March, April, May)
Summer (June, July, August)
Autumn (September, October, November)
Winter (December, January, February)
Stonehenge and Around the World
If you can travel to Stonehenge in the UK, you can join the huge gathering of people there who will spend the evening singing, dancing and also meditate with some fire rituals too.
In Estonia and Latvia, they believe that the bonfire will scare off any mischievous or malicious spirits that will ruin their harvest crops. So, the bigger the fire, the more abundant the harvest will be. Estonians take it one step further as they believe not having a fire celebration of some type will invite fire into their home and they will suffer loss.
In Denmark, customs mean burning a homemade scarecrow figure on top of the fire to represent the spirits and this will scare them off.
They are more energetic with their bonfires in Croatia, Lithuania, Russia and Spain. In Spain they shout ‘meigas!‘, meaning ‘Bad spirits go away!’, and this will allow prosperity to flow in.
Flowers and Herbs
If jumping over a bonfire doesn’t liven you up then you can head over to Norway or Sweden and collect summer flowers and herbs to guide you to find a husband or wife. The more potent herbs such as St John’s Wort are deemed very important for this activity. They are made into bunches that can be hung in your doorway or left overnight in water.
Once they are washed the next day, they are placed under a young girl or man’s pillow and this will let them dream of their future love. If you travel to Romania, they perform the drăgaica to meet their true love. The tradition involves young girls dancing around another young girl dressed as a bride.
So which way would you like to celebrate Solstice 2019?
There are many ways to see in the summer season. If you live in an apartment or lighting a fire simply isn’t an option, perhaps consider connecting with nature with a lovely stroll in a nearby forest or along a beach to watch the sunset. The main thing is to celebrate our connection with Mother Nature and the abundance we receive from her.
