There are six meetings across Britain and Ireland on Thursday, with Newbury, Yarmouth and Nottingham in the afternoon preceding Leopardstown and Haydock in the evening, while jumps fare from Worcester rounds up the action.
Amongst our fancies for today’s cards is a recent eye-catcher bidding to benefit from the arrival of James Doyle in the saddle at Haydock in their opening contest.
Selections
- Haydock 5.40 – Giovanni Baglione @ 9/2
- Newbury 4.00 – Flying Secret @ 7/1
- Haydock 8.15 – Trais Flours @ 6/4
Tip 1
Evening fare from Haydock Park gets underway via the King’s Moss Handicap over the extended mile-and-a-quarter trip and Joseph Parr’s GIOVANNI BAGLIONE (9/2) is a potential improver lurking in the pack.
He made a winning handicap bow at Newmarket (1m, good) last June and ran some good races in defeat afterwards, including at this track where he was nosed out in July.
The Caravaggio gelding ticked over on the all-weather in the winter, but was an eye-catcher in last month’s turf comeback at Yarmouth, his first attempt at this new trip.
Patiently ridden there, he came from a long way back to be a clear third at the line, the front two having flown before he got going and he was looking strong at the finish.
With his fitness now boosted and the booking of James Doyle promising given that he has a fine record when riding for this stable, he’s fancied to build on that pleasing comeback.
Tip 2
The Highclere Castle Gin Handicap at Newbury is a competitive 12-runner affair, but there are reasons to see value in the chances of FLYING SECRET (7/1) for Eve Johnson Houghton.
The Showcasing gelding showed some promise last summer on turf and again in a Kempton novice contest in November.
After seemingly needing his comeback at Chelmsford in April, he duly notched his first success in a Yarmouth handicap (7f, good to firm) at the start of this month after a short lay-off.
He did that well in a time that was decent, and the form looks reliable with a next-time-out winner in fourth.
He’s 5lb higher in a tougher race now, but is entitled to improve and Mia Nicholls takes off what could be a very useful 7lb in the plate as they look to justify inclusion on the Most Napped table via the Betfred Betfinder for Thursday’s action.
Tip 3
TRAIS FLUORS (6/4) moved like the best horse in the race at Goodwood last Friday after a couple of good efforts at Newbury and Windsor and he ultimately landed that apprentice handicap at the Sussex course with something to spare.
By virtue of it having been an apprentice race, he escapes a penalty now and is officially 4lb ‘well-in’ for this Lyme Wood Handicap over a mile at Haydock.
The veteran found life tough in Britain after arriving from France, where he was a six-time winner including in Listed company as a three-year-old, but it was no shock given recent efforts that he took advantage of a much-declined handicap mark and he can pounce again in what looks a weaker race on paper.
Jack Channon’s charge is on the Most Napped table via the Betfred Betfinder for Thursday’s action and looks well placed.
