San Francisco 49ers

Going into this season, the NFC West appears to be the San Francisco 49ers division to lose. They made the NFC Championship Game last season despite injuries to several quarterbacks pushing them into playing Brock Purdy and Josh Johnson in the playoffs. Purdy was great last year, and he and Trey Lance should both be back to play quarterback for this team in 2023.

Around their quarterbacks, the Niners have some of the best skill position players in the league, and an incredible defense to back them up. Barring any quarterback injuries again this year, the Niners could very well come out on top of the NFC West and the NFC as a whole.

Seattle Seahawks

Last season was a pleasant surprise for the Seattle Seahawks, as they earned a Wild Card berth at 9-8 on the year. Trading away Russell Wilson turned out to be the best thing for them, as Geno Smith ended up being a better quarterback than Wilson was last season by a wide margin. This season, Smith should be their quarterback again, and he will have another weapon to work with in Jaxon Smith-Njigba out of Ohio State.

Seattle’s defense will be its question mark going into the 2023 NFL season. They ranked 30th in the league against the run, which really prevented them from letting their offense shine. Fixing that will be their top priority, especially with Christian McCaffrey set to play in San Francisco for a full season for the first time.

Los Angeles Rams

The Los Angeles Rams traded in a ton of draft capital to try and win a Super Bowl, and that plan worked out for them as they won a title a couple of seasons ago. But they may not be able to reach that level without the ability to reload their roster in the draft. While Matthew Stafford is healthy going into this year, which should help them improve from last year’s 5-12 season, the Rams defense around Aaron Donald is not the group it was when they were cashing in on their Super Bowl window.

Arizona Cardinals

Going into the 2023 season, the biggest longshot in the NFC West is the Arizona Cardinals. Perhaps unsurprisingly, things fell apart pretty quickly for Kliff Kingsbury in Arizona, just as they had when he failed to win anything at Texas Tech as a college coach. With Kingsbury gone, the Cardinals will look to rebuild under new head coach Jonathan Gannon.

Kyler Murray will no longer have his top weapon in the passing game in 2023, as Deandre Hopkins is now a free agent. Murray has struggled with consistency when healthy even with Hopkins in the fold. There is no telling how things will go for him or the Cardinals from here.

2023 NFC West Futures Prediction

The San Francisco 49ers are clearly the class of the NFC West at this point in time. Their defense is elite, and the return of healthy quarterbacks to their huddle will only extend their advantage over the rest of this division. San Francisco should be a heavy favorite to win the NFC West by the midpoint of this season, and bettors may want to wager on them to finish in first place before they reach that point.
