A beyond burger with Hawaiian style trimmings made in the air fryer.

Plant-based burgers have come on so much recently in both flavor and texture, which is fantastic for those who want to reduce their meat intake and help the planet. Beyond Burgers are one of our family favorites out of the pre-made burgers available- however you can easily use the same method with other vegan burgers! In summer we like to grill our burgers, but when time is tight, or it’s raining and cold, the air-fryer is our best friend for burger cooking.

If you’re like me and love a burger but want to make your own vegetarian burger patties, you should try making a batch of my Vegan Seitan Burgers which also have a great texture which meat eaters rave about. Or if a more plant-forward and gluten-free burger appeals, my Easy Chickpea Patties (Gluten-Free) are a great option too. I love to serve my burgers with a zesty salad like this Grated French Raw Carrot Salad or this Easy Cucumber and Carrot Salad for balance and freshness.

🍔Ingredients

Ingredients for Beyond Burger in the air fryer with Hawaiian trimmings.

What you’ll need to make air-fried beyond burgers:

  • Beyond Burger Patties: Beyond burgers are designed to taste and look like a real beef meat patty. Of course you could also try Impossible Burgers or other vegan burgers that are available.
  • A little of optional olive oil or cooking spray to brush the burgers.
  • Hamburger Buns – choose your favourite type of bun!
  • Toppings such as a vegan cheese slice, onion rings, lettuce, tomato, pineapple, pickles – or any topping you like on regular burgers will work!
  • Burger sauces– I like to make my own Vegan Aioli or sometimes my own Vegan Sriracha Mayonnaise

Beyond Burger Ingredients: Beyond burgers signature meaty texture is created with a combination of pea protein and brown rice protein, which when combined make a complete protein. Each burger contains 19 grams of protein and are suitable for nut allergies. They also contain canola oil and coconut oil as well as natural flavors such as lemon juice and pomegranate extract. Check out their website for the full ingredients list.

See recipe card for quantities and see the notes below for topping ideas for other air fryer veggie burgers such as the Hawaiian burger featured in the photos.

👩‍🍳Instructions

Brush the burgers with a little oil before adding to the air fryer.

1.Preheat your air fryer to 180C and brush the burgers with a little oil (optional(

Cook the burgers and flip half way.

2. Put the beyond burger patties in a single layer into the air fryer basket.

Add extras such as onion rings or pineapple to the air fryer to grill for the last 5 minutes if you like.

3. Flip the burgers after 5 minutes to ensure even cooking. I like to sometimes add onion rings or pineapple to cook through here.

The beyond burgers should be browned on the outside and juicy in the middle.

4. The burgers are done when they reach an interior temperature of 74C/165F and are golden brown. The inside might look a little pink and should still be juicy. Total cooking time no more than 10 minutes.

Now all you need to do is grab your burger bun and all your favorite toppings for a yummy and quick burger!

Hint: For Frozen Beyond Burgers the brand suggests you thaw before cooking, however sometimes time is tight and bellies are hungry. I suggest starting the burgers off on a lower heat for 5 minutes so they thaw, then turn the heat up to 180C/356F to finish cooking. You can also use the defrost setting on your microwave to thaw the burgers before finishing them off in the air fryer.

🍍Topping Ideas

You can make Beyond Meat Burgers in pretty much any way you like to eat traditional beef burgers. Here are some of my favorite vegan burger topping combinations.

  • Hawaiian- grill pineapple rings alongside the burgers. Serve with some Teriyaki Sauce, vegan cheese, vegan mayo and lettuce
  • Green Goddess – avocado, crispy green coleslaw and green goddess dressing with some green jalapenos.
  • Spicy BBQ- Sweet BBQ sauce, extra vegan cheese slices and grilled onions.
  • Bacon n ‘Cheese- Make some vegan facon (or buy some) and grab some vegan smoked gouda cheese. Don’t forget the burger sauce.
  • Wild Mushroom- grill wild mushrooms (like oyster mushrooms, chanterelles or lion’s mane) with some garlic. Slice and add with some vegan cheese, mayo and chili sauce.

Of course you might want to create a more complete meal by adding more plant-based ingredients or sides. I love to serve burgers with this zesty Potato Salad with Dill and Peas or with a light salad.

🔪Equipment

Being able to quickly cook meals in the air fryer has definitely helped with keeping our meals healthy and quick. I love my Ninja Foodie Air fryer as it has a large basket which suits my cooking style. I often start sweet potato fries off in the air fryer, then push them aside when nearly cooked to make my burgers. If you have a larger family it’s worth checking out air fryers with two drawers so you can make a complete meal all at once!

🫙Storage

Burgers really are best eaten quickly once assembled. However if you cook the Beyond burgers and don’t get a chance to eat them right away, I would hold off assembling the burger, then re-heat the burger for a few minutes before creating your burger.

Uncooked burgers keep well in the fridge in an airtight container for 4-5 days, and frozen beyond burgers should be ok in the freezer for up to 3 months.

❗Top tip

Air Fryers work by blowing hot air over the food to cook it quickly and evenly. I like to spritz a little oil on my burgers to ensure a deliciously juicy burger that doesn’t dry out!

❓FAQ

Do I need additional seasoning for Beyond Burgers?

Beyond burgers are pre-seasoned to taste just like a real burger. You can add your favorite seasonings such as garlic powder or black pepper if you wish, however it’s not necessary.

Do I need to line my air fryer with parchment paper?

Your air fryer should be easy to clean. Parchment paper can be dangerous in an air fryer because of how hot it gets inside. If you wish to prevent your food catching and help with clean up, you can get silicone mats .

Can I use this method to cook different brands of burgers?

Yes absolutely, this air fry method to cook burgers can be used for Impossible Burgers, Moving Mountain Burgers or any other plant-based burger patty you like.
