Giants vs Reds Odds & Picks (July 20)

  • The Giants and Reds clash on Thursday, July 20th
  • San Francisco heads in as the -130 favorite
  • Below, see the Giants vs Reds odds and predictions

The San Francisco Giants (54-41, 28-19 away) and the Cincinnati Reds (50-46, 23-26 home) will wrap up a four-game series on Thursday afternoon. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:35 PM ET at the Great American Ball Park.

We have a potential pitcher’s duel on our hands with who is on the mound here. Alex Cobb gets the ball for the Giants, while the Reds counter with rookie Andrew Abbott, one of their best arms at the moment.

Giants vs Reds Odds

Team Moneyline Runline Total
San Francisco Giants -125 -1.5 (+125) Ov 9.5 (-115)
Cincinnati Reds +105 +1.5 (-145) Un 9.5 (-105)

The Giants come in as a -125 favorite for an implied win probability of 55.56%. The Bucs meanwhile sit at +110. The total in runs is set at 9.5, which feels rather high considering the top-tier arms on each side in the rubber match.

San Francisco vs Cincinnati Probable Starters

Cobb might be 35 years old now, but he’s having a fantastic season which even earned him his first-ever All-Star Game selection. The right-hander is 6-2 with a 2.82 ERA in 17 starts, striking out 91 in 95.2 innings while walking just 23. Cobb is someone Gabe Kapler can rely on every fifth day.

The veteran was sharp as can be in his first outing since the ASG festivities, tossing six frames of one-run baseball against the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 15th. He also struck out five. Cobb also happens to have a stellar track record versus Cincinnati, posting a 1.48 ERA in four career appearances. Another gem could be in the cards.

Cobb vs Abbott Stats

Alex Cobb
VS
Andrew Abbott
6-2 Record 4-2
2.82 ERA 2.46
95.2 Innings Pitched 47.2
91 Strikeouts 51
23 Walks 16

Since getting called up to the Majors at the beginning of June, Abbott has only gone on to produce a 4-2 record and 2.46 ERA. Not bad for a rookie. The left-hander is pounding the strike zone and inducing weak contact along with also racking up his fair share of K’s. Aside from the 51 strikeouts, he’s only issued 16 free passes in 47.2 innings.

While Abbott did have his worst MLB outing yet on July 7th, he bounced back in a big way on July 15th against the same Brewers team who lit him up. The 24-year-old limited them to two runs in six innings of work. Abbott has never faced the Giants.

Giants Are Scorching Hot

The NL West race is really, really heating up. The Diamondbacks are sliding while the Giants and Dodgers are getting hot. San Fran is riding a seven-game winning streak heading into Wednesday’s meeting with Cincy and sits at 8-2 in their previous 10 games.

At the moment, the divisional crown is up for grabs. The Giants sit one game behind first-place LA and just one game above the D-Backs, who continue to be a threat despite their recent struggles. San Francisco has a lot of winnable contests ahead of them too, visiting the Nationals and Tigers next. Time to rack up those victories.  However,  shortstop Brandon Crawford was just placed on the 10-day IL.

The Elly De La Cruz Effect

It’s common knowledge rookie phenom Elly De La Cruz has injected life into the Reds, who suddenly find themselves in the playoff conversation. But, they’re currently in a rut, losing six in a row ahead of Wednesday’s game. Regardless, the Reds are only 2.5 games out of first place and have +130 NL Central odds.

De La Cruz is hitting .288 with four homers, nine doubles, and three triples in 35 games since getting called up to the show. That being said, he’s in a slump at the moment with only one hit in his last five games. Cincinnati needs him to break out.

Giants vs Reds Prediction

Cobb is throwing the ball far too well and has dominated the Reds in his career. That’s enough for me to ride the Giants moneyline.

Pick: Giants moneyline (-125)
