Derby Week Racing started on Saturday April 27th and concludes with The Kentucky Derby 2024. One of horse racing’s most esteemed events, its set to take place on May 4th at Churchill Downs, marking its 150th running. Owners often seize the chance to vie for victory in this prestigious race, driving investments in the sport.

Among the 16 horses participating in this year’s Run for the Roses, several owners are making their debut in the race. While West Paces Racing stands out as the sole owner affiliated with multiple starters.

The racetrack covers about 71 hectares and includes a 1,609-meter oval dirt track and a seven-furlong turf course. Every year, the barns behind the racetrack accommodate over 1,400 horses.

Kentucky History

Churchill Downs, the iconic home of the Kentucky Derby, started out in 1875 with a bang as nearly 10,000 spectators attended its inaugural meet. Little did they know, they were witnessing the beginning of what would become one of the most famous horse racing events in the world. Now attracting record crowds of over 170,000.

Over the years, the track saw many changes, including a risky yet rewarding move in 1908 to introduce betting machines. This drastically increased the money wagered at the Derby. Another unusual yet historic event occurred in 1910. This is when aviator Glenn Curtiss took flight from the infield, marking one of Kentucky’s first-ever flights.

These snippets of history highlight the dynamic and colorful past of Churchill Downs. Thus making it much more than just a venue for horse racing. Since 1875, Churchill Downs Racetrack, has been the home of the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks. Also hosting these prestigious thoroughbred races every year.

The racetrack has also welcomed the Breeders’ Cup World Championship eight times. Spanning three centuries, the track has undergone numerous significant renovations to update its historic grandstand and clubhouse. In order to support the over 170 000 visitors it draws on Kentucky Derby Day.

These modernizations include the addition of private luxury suites and integrated simulcast viewing areas. As well as permanent lights for night racing, and the installation of The Big Board, which is the world’s largest 4k video screen.

The Twin Spires, designed by architect Joseph Dominic Baldez and constructed in 1895, top the grandstands. These iconic spires are a hallmark of Churchill Downs. Simply lighting up the skyline each evening and symbolizing the track’s storied legacy.
