There’s a seven-race card on the Tapeta at Newcastle on Thursday afternoon and things are set fair for a competitive day of equine action.
The meeting is highlighted by a Class 2 handicap over one mile, and that’s a race where this season’s Irish Lincolnshire winner Lattam, goes to post.
Newcastle Betting Tips
15:20 – Symbol Of Light @ SP
SYMBOL OF LIGHT hasn’t been for 518 days, but the four-year-old has won three of his four career starts, he is unbeaten on synthetic surfaces and it’s quite possible that we haven’t seen the best of the son of Shamardal.
Clearly, the absence is a concern, but Symbol Of Light has scored off a 68-day break in the past, he has undergone a wind op since switching from Charlie Appleby to the Julie Camacho yard, and while it’s not clear how much ability remains, if we wait to see that on the track, the price up for grabs today won’t be available next time out.
This is a competitive race and Lattam is likely to be a popular choice. However, William Haggas’ runner seems best with give in the ground and he has never run on the all-weather.
15:55 – Mekbat @ SP
MEKBAT kept on well when not getting a clear run at this track last time out and Susan Corbett’s charge looks a cracking bet in the 15:55.
The four-year-old gets in off a mark over 55, allowing the son of Zelzal to drop in grade in today’s 0-55 handicap, and that could be just the tonic.
Mekbat is yet to get his head in front, but the four-year-old has run with credit on the all-weather in the past and this looks a good opportunity for Corbett’s charge to break his duck.
16:30 – Beelzebub @ SP
BEELZEBUB looked a progressive performer when scoring at Chelmsford and Newcastle and the three-year-old can get back to winning ways here.
James Ferguson’s runner was a little keen at Kempton last time out, but the four-year-old wasn’t beaten far and still managed to keep on well after racing too freely at the Sunbury venue.
Beelzebub has cheekpieces on for the first time in this race, which could make him more tractable in the run-in and the three-year-old could also benefit from a step down in grade.
A mark of 78 doesn’t look prohibitive and going over five furlongs may also suit a horse that has always shown plenty of speed and enthusiasm.
