Solvero Wines logoSolvero Wines is one of the newest wineries in British Columbia. It is located at Garnet Valley in Summerland.  Andrea and Bob Sartor are the proprietors of the winery with their son, Matt Sartor, who took the Viticulture program at Okanagan College. The owners’ commitment is to minimal intervention and transparency in all aspects of wine production.  Matt selected and planted 7 clones of Pinot Noir in 2016 and 2 clones of Chardonnay in 2017.  Alison Moyes is their winemaker.  This year is the first release of their wines.  You may want to buy some bottles now and the next few vintages to see how their growing knowledge of the vineyard terroir affects the wines produced.  I love lighter-styled Pinot Noir wines and looked forward to opening this bottle.

My Wine Tasting Notes

Solvero Wines Pinot Noir 2020 (BC $35)

All seven Pinot Noir clones went into making this wine: 115, 227, 777, 828, 943, Swan, and Pommard.  The wines spent 12 months in barrel after fermentation with 33% in new French oak.  I wonder as time goes on, will single varietal Pinots be made, or different clone mixes?

Appearance: A clear, medium-intensity garnet colour.  About 50% opaque from rim to core.
Nose: Medium-minus intensity aromas of sweet red fruit, candied red fruit, cedar, freshly ground cinnamon, toast and a touch of floral. The aromas may bump up to medium intensity with decanting.
Palate: Dry, medium body with a lean mouthfeel to start that gets rounder with swirling in the glass.  A smooth mouthfeel.  Fresh fruit flavours and acidity.  Red fruit, red cherries, cinnamon, mineral, light smokiness, floral and plum flavours.  Medium acidity and tannins.  There are more tart red fruit flavours and a leaner mouthfeel with decanting.
Finish: A medium-plus length finishing with red fruit, minerality, some tartness, candied red fruits and light fine-grained tannins. More tart fruit flavours with decanting.  I also pick up some light pepperiness.  More acidity and less tannins.

An elegant Pinot Noir.  I prefer the undecanted version with its rounder mouthfeel, but it could be with a longer (e.g. 2-day) decant, the roundness to the wine may come back.

Rating: 4 stars4.5 stars An elegant Pinot Noir with lighter aromas of red fruit and candied red fruits, cedar, cinnamon, toast and floral. This wine is dry with a medium body.  A smooth mouthfeel.  More red fruit, cinnamon, and floral on the palate.  A medium-plus length.
