The Derby Odds 2023: Four horses lead the Betting with Betfred

The Betfred Derby comes early in the card on Super Saturday in large part due to the FA Cup Final taking place on the same day. 14 runners are set for the race set for a 13:30 start at Epsom Downs and we take an overview of the odds a day out from the big race…

Unlike the Betfred Oaks on Friday, the Derby has several horses all considered very much in the mix in the betting with four horses priced up between 7/2 and 6/1 as of late Friday morning.

Betfred traders currently have Auguste Roden as our favourite with us despite losing as a 13/8 top choice last time out. He was hampered early on and his trainer said that the horse never travelled well after that, finishing 22 lengths behind the winner that day, Chaldean. Clearly this effort hasn’t put off the punters although maybe we could have expected an even shorter price had that disappointing run not happened. Ryan Moore gets the ride.

A hair below in the betting is the 4/1 shot Military Order who is sporting a three-race winning streak and hasn’t gone off as longer than Even money in any of his four starts to date. Plenty to like about this Charlie Appleby trained three-year-old although some questions remain about his top-level speed. Those questions will be answered once and for all by late lunch on Saturday.

No doubt we’ll see plenty of money for the Frankie Dettori piloted Arrest who is currently 9/2 with us. The superstar jockey is set to retire at the end of the year and had hoped to go out with wins in the biggest races across the world. Sadly for him, his ride in the Kentucky Derby got hurt so that dream didn’t come to pass but he has every chance of bowing out a Derby winner back in the UK. I think that price will drop as the casual punters looking to back one more win for Frankie.

At 6/1 and the fourth of the crop of favourites is another outstanding horse bred stateside but who has raced over here in the UK. Sired by two time Group I winner Ulysses, Passenger has speed to burn and was terribly unlucky in the Dante Stakes up at York. He has every chance to upset the apple cart and that price is mightily tempting. He is the top selection of our Horse Racing tipster Owen McMahon who tipped him up at 9/2, so that price is growing. Beyond the top four, we are starting to get towards the bigger prices and the more each-way selections. Sprewell is at 11s with White Bitch and The Foxes both available at 12s as of 11AM on Friday. 18/1 can get you either Dubai Mile or Waipro whilst 25s is there for San Antonio and Artistic Star. Then we get to the real outsiders at 50s in Adelaide River and King of Steel before the 80/1 longshot Dear My Friend rounds out the field. Remember a year ago though when 80/1 shot Rich Strike won the Kentucky Derby!
