Trillium Health given approval to expand Toronto health centre

Trillium Health Partners has received approval from the City of Toronto to expand its Gilgan Family Queensway Health Centre in Toronto, Canada.

toronto.com reported that the expansion will establish a dedicated centre for complex continuing care and rehabilitation services.

The future facility will have nine storeys and cover 600,000ft², with space for more than 350 beds in private rooms.

The site plan approval was described as a ‘major milestone’ and comes after years of planning, design and engagement work.

Trillium Health Partners president and CEO Karli Farrow said: “We are grateful for the support of the City of Toronto and the community as we move forward.

“Trillium Health Partners is an essential part of our healthcare system, and this new hospital expansion will help ensure that our residents have access to the best possible care.”

The next steps of the project will involve completing design plans, obtaining building permits and finalising finances.

Construction of the project is expected to begin next year.

This expansion aims to meet the community’s growing healthcare needs and provide specialised care to patients in a more accessible manner.

Etobicoke-Lakeshore MPP Christine Hogarth said: “This project is a great example of what happens when we all work together.

“I am proud to support Trillium Health Partners and the important work they do in providing state-of-the-art patient care.”

Earlier this year, Canadian real estate developer Orlando Corporation pledged to donate up to C$75m ($56.5m) to Trillium Health Partners.

Of the donation, C$50m will be used to build the future home of The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital, while C$10m will go towards developing a two-storey mental health inpatient unit in the new hospital.

The remaining C$15m will be used to facilitate Trillium Health Partners’ Institute for Better Health, which aims to promote research and innovation in healthcare.
