Wednesday Racing Tips: Frankie looking for better on day two at Ascot

It’s day two at Royal Ascot on Wednesday and that is one of six meetings taking place across Britain and Ireland.

Ascot is joined by action on the Flat from Hamilton in the afternoon, while they go at Newcastle and Ripon later alongside jumps fare from Worcester (afternoon) and Wexford (evening).

Amongst our midweek fancies is a possible pick-me-up for Frankie Dettori at Ascot after a frustrating first afternoon at the most prestigious meeting on the calendar.

Selections

  • Ascot 5.35 – Gregory @ 7/4
  • Ripon 6.35 – Khinjani @ 10/3
  • Hamilton 4.10 – Cwenhild @ 40/1

Tip 1

Three silver medals and a nine-day ban for careless riding weren’t what Frankie Dettori had dreamed about on the opening day of his final Royal Ascot, but that’s how things played out for the Italian.

Dettori is not a man to wallow in self-pity and, with four more days to come, he’ll be more determined than ever to put a positive slant on his final Royal Ascot.

The Queen’s Vase offers him one of his best chances of the week when he rides GREGORY (7/4) for John & Thady Gosden.

This son of Golden Horn has won 2-2 so far, following up an impressive Haydock debut in April with an even more pleasing success in the Listed Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood (1m3f, good) last month.

He moved stylishly in that contest and while he very briefly looked a bit green, he was able to move away and win by three lengths, never stronger than at the line.

On that evidence, this increased trip should be ideal and he is the one to beat in this Group 2 over 1m6f for Dettori and Team Gosden.

Tip 2

The Ripon Farm Services Fillies’ Handicap over just shy of a mile-and-a-quarter looks a good spot for KHINJANI (10/3) for Ed Walker and Ross Coakley.

The Sir Percy filly showed improved form in her handicap bow at Redcar three weeks ago, finishing third on her first start since November.

That effort can be upgraded to a degree, as the winner Spring Fever had a tactical advantage and got first run, while both runner-up Zarga and Khinjani in third had to come from further back in the field.

The winner went close from 7lb higher at Salisbury last week, while the Redcar fifth Flight Of Angels has won at Wetherby since for Charlie Johnston.

From an unchanged mark, this filly should build on that comeback run and that will put her firmly in the mix.

Tip 3

As yet, CWENHILD (40/1) hasn’t shown a lot on the track but she’s a filly by Saxon Warrior with winners in the family and she’s entitled to improve from her basement rating before long.

She raced five times last summer at trips ranging from 5f-1m and achieved little as a 2YO. This month’s return at Ripon saw her running fifth of eight in a mile handicap on quick ground.

She made a move to challenge at the 2f pole but couldn’t quite sustain it and faded, leaving the impression she’d be better for the outing.

She’s got 8st 4lb to carry in this Hamilton Class 6 event and could improve her lot. This is a Betfred Extra Place Race (three places) and it isn’t beyond the realms the filly could build on that comeback and find her way into the frame.
