Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Angels (54-49, 25-26 away) will continue their three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays (57-46, 27-20 home) on Saturday afternoon at the Rogers Centre. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:07 PM ET.

On the hill, the Halos go with Reid Detmers. The Jays counter with Alek Manoah, who is slowly finding his footing at the big league level again after a brief stint in the minor leagues.

Los Angeles vs Toronto Probable Pitchers

While his 2-7 record doesn’t exactly look great, Detmers is having a respectable season. He owns a 4.38 ERA in 18 starts to go along with a 1.30 WHIP. Perhaps the most impressive statistic for Detmers is the 122 strikeouts in 96.2 innings. The left-hander truly possesses swing-and-miss stuff.

Last time out against the Pirates, Detmers put his best foot forward, tossing five innings of two-run baseball, walking just one and striking out nine. But due to a lack of run support, he took the loss. Detmers already faced the Jays earlier in the season, allowing five runs in five frames.

Detmers vs Manoah Stats

Detmers
VS
Manoah
2-7 Record 2-8
4.38 ERA 6.10
96.2 Innings Pitched 72.1
122 Strikeouts 62
35 Walks 51

It’s common knowledge that Manoah’s numbers do not look good. He owns a 2-8 record and a 6.10 ERA this season after putting together a Cy Young-caliber campaign last year. Because of his struggles, Toronto made the difficult decision to send him down to work on his mechanics and hopefully figure things out.

And by the looks of it, he’s on the right track.

Manoah allowed just one run in his first start back on July 7th before the Padres tagged him for four runs the next time out. However, the right-hander battled last weekend in Seattle, lasting 5.1 innings and giving up three earned on three hits, ultimately settling for the no decision.

Manoah has enjoyed his fair share of success against the Angels too, compiling a 2.29 ERA in three career outings.

Angels Committed to Contending

Los Angeles was seen as a potential seller at the deadline, with superstar Shohei Ohtani popping up in trade rumors. However, the Angels have committed to keeping the two-way phenom and since then, they’ve even added, acquiring Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez from the White Sox.

Currently just three games out of the final AL Wild Card spot, the playoffs remain a reality. Ahead of Friday’s contest, LA has won four in a row and owns an 8-2 record in their last 10 outings. The Angels are trending upwards and it shouldn’t be too long until Mike Trout is back, too.

Important Homestand For Toronto

The Jays just finished their road trip with some serious momentum, taking two out of three from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Now, this homestand becomes the focus, which is seemingly important for the playoff race.

Not only are the Angels chasing them in the Wild Card but the first-place Baltimore Orioles are up next starting Monday. Gaining ground on the O’s is absolutely vital.

Angels vs Blue Jays Picks

Although it’s hard to have much confidence in Manoah, he does have a good track record against the Angels while the Jays lit up Detmers in April. That’s enough reason for me to take Toronto.

Pick: Blue Jays moneyline -130
