Broncos let Russell Wilson know they intend to part ways

Following months of speculation, the Denver Broncos chose to part ways with star quarterback Russell Wilson after just two seasons.

The Broncos will take on a league-record $85 million in total dead salary cap over the next two years. Wilson will be officially released after the start of the league year on March 13.

“On behalf of the Broncos, we thank Russell for his contributions and dedication to our team and community while wishing him the best as he continues his career,” general manager George Paton and coach Sean Payton said in a joint statement via NFL.com.

“As we move forward, we are focused on building the strongest team possible for the 2024 season and beyond. We are excited to improve this offseason and will have the flexibility to get better through the draft and free agency.”

The writing was on the wall for Wilson as Payton had elected to not play him down the stretch of the regular season. The Broncos had hoped that his arrival would push the franchise back into the playoffs and much more.

However, Wilson struggled mightily in his first campaign and continued to experience peaks and valleys under Payton. In 30 games with Denver, he compiled an 11-19 record while throwing for 6,594 passing yards with 42 touchdown passes to 19 interceptions.

His release will put him on the open market before he began his five-year, $242.6 million contract.

Wilson will hit the open market where he will have the chance to latch onto another franchise. The nine-time Pro Bowl will certainly garner interest from several teams.
