Goodwood Tips: Al Asifah the one to beat

Goodwood Tips: Al Asifah the one to beat

Goodwood stages seven races on what should be a sunny Sunday at the West Sussex track, with the feature contest being the Listed Weatherbys/British EBF Agnes Keyser Fillies’ Stakes at 15:20.

The first race is due off at 13:35 and the seventh and last one is set for 16:55. We have a pick in the opener, one in the big race at 15:20 and also a selection for the penultimate contest, which is another Listed event, the Tapster Stakes, at 16:25.

Goodwood Betting Tips:

  • 13:35 – La Maquina @ SP
  • 15:20 – Al Asifah @ SP
  • 16:25 – Candleford @ SP

13:35 – La Maquina

LA MAQUINA (SP) is a multiple 7f winner who caught the eye a bit when under the guidance of George Baker last year, finishing a respectable fifth at both Wolverhampton and Kempton in successive races.

Now racing for Harry Eustace, the eight-year-old has since recorded a fifth at Ascot and fourth at York in the past month to suggest better things are on the horizon and this race could suit as he lines up against just eight rivals.

Others to consider in what looks like being a very competitive opener include Bass Player (SP), who is the highest-rated horse in the field and who won on debut in a Doncaster maiden last spring, and the lightly-raced Al Rufaa (SP).

15:20 – Al Asifah

AL ASIFAH (SP) was hugely impressive on her debut when winning a Haydock maiden last month and this daughter of Frankel appears to be a rising star under the watchful eyes of the Gosdens.

Furthering her pedigree, her dam is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Awtaad, who won races like this when rising through the ranks, and this looks to be a great chance to make it two from two.

Among the seven other runners, Ermesinde (SP) was a winner on debut at Lingfield in February and has subsequently been placed on both runs since, while Conservationist (SP) is stepping up but still demands respect after a second place at Haydock last month.

16:25 – Candleford

Just four line up for the Tapster Stakes and CANDLEFORD (SP) appears to be the pick of them.

Candleford easily took the Duke of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot last summer and, while he may not have quite lived up to expectations since, there do not look to be too many dangers in this small field.

The five-year-old, who is trained by William Haggas, came in third at Ascot and then did the same at Kempton (both in October) and reappears now after a seventh-month rest.

First Ruler (SP) is the only one of the four to have won so far in 2023 when he came out on top amongst 11 runners in Meydan in February and he also has claims.
